THE PENNINE WAY
THE ICONIC ENGLISH WALK
The Pennine Way is one of England's most iconic long-distance walking routes, stretching approximately 268 miles (431 kilometers) from Edale in Derbyshire to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. Officially opened in 1965, it holds the distinction of being England's first national trail. The path traverses the backbone of England, the Pennines, often referred to as the "spine" of the country. Walkers embarking on this journey experience a diverse range of landscapes, from the rugged moorlands and limestone valleys of the Peak District, through the stunning Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines, to the rolling Cheviot Hills at the border with Scotland.

The Pennine Way is renowned for its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather, demanding a high level of endurance and preparedness from walkers. Despite these challenges, the route offers immense rewards. Highlights include the dramatic Malham Cove, the historic town of Haworth, home of the Brontë sisters, the striking Cross Fell, the highest point in England outside the Lake District, and the breathtaking vistas along Hadrian’s Wall. The path also provides a unique opportunity to explore a rich tapestry of English history, culture, and wildlife, making it a must-do for avid hikers and lovers of the great outdoors. Whether tackled in sections or as a continuous trek, the Pennine Way remains a true adventure, encapsulating the rugged beauty and timeless allure of the English countryside.

ABOUT THE DRAGON'S ASCENT
TAN HILL INN TO THE GREEN DRAGON HARDRAW
One of the memorable sections of the Pennine Way is the trek from the Tan Hill Inn to the Green Dragon Inn in Hardraw. The journey begins at the Tan Hill Inn, the highest pub in Britain, situated at 1,732 feet (528 meters) above sea level. This historic and remote inn provides a cosy and atmospheric start, often surrounded by the stark beauty of the Yorkshire Dales. From there, the route leads walkers across the undulating moorlands of Swaledale, offering sweeping views of the rugged landscape, dotted with dry stone walls and isolated farmhouses. As walkers progress, they pass through the charming village of Keld, known for its picturesque waterfalls and serene ambiance.

The path then continues towards Great Shunner Fell, the third highest peak in the Yorkshire Dales, standing at 2,349 feet (716 meters). The ascent is rewarded with panoramic vistas stretching across the Dales, before descending into the tiny village of Hardraw. Here, walkers can visit the Green Dragon Inn, a historic pub dating back to the 13th century, famous for its proximity to Hardraw Force, England's highest single-drop waterfall. This section of the Pennine Way, combining natural beauty with historical intrigue and rustic charm, provides a truly enriching experience for those trekking through this iconic English landscape.
