THE DRAGON'S ASCENT
ENGLAND'S WILD COUNTRY AT ITS FINEST
The Dragon’s Ascent Challenge is the rugged 15-mile route from The Green Dragon Inn at Hardraw to the Tan Hill Inn, the highest pub in Britain, which lies at 1732 feet (528m) on the moors high above Swaledale.
The Challenge begins at Hardraw (780ft / 238m), near Hawes in upper Wensleydale, and climbs to the summit of Great Shunner Fell (2,349ft / 716m). It then descends to lovely Swaledale and the picturesque village of Thwaite before following the River Wharf to the tiny hamlet of Keld. The final stretch takes you up and over Stonesdale Moor and on to Tan Hill.
The Dragon’s Ascent Challenge captures the essence of the Pennine Way in one trip, taking in the scenic beauty of the Dales and exposed moorland of the north Pennines.

It is a truly enriching experience for those wanting to experience this lovely English landscape.
The historic Green Dragon Inn at the start dates from the 13th century and is close by Hardraw Force, England’s highest drop waterfall. It is renowned for its old-world feel, boasting beams, stone floors, open fires and Yorkshire warmth.
The Tan Hill Inn at the end of the route has earned its place in British pub folklore as the highest pub in the land and its renowned hospitality makes it the perfect place to finish. Put your feet up by the fire, raise a toast and bask in the glory of completing the Dragon’s Ascent Challenge!
